A Balanced Outlook

When we struggle with codependency, there is a tendency to experience life in extremes. While this can be exciting, it creates a pattern in our lives that feels a bit chaotic and out of control. Our emotions have all the power and may feel too big for certain experiences. The impact of extreme living effects our spiritual, mental, and physical health. It also negatively impacts our relationships. Raising awareness on where we see ourselves bouncing from zero to one hundred can open up choices. Once we can label a pattern, we can step in and choose to try something different.

As a recovering codependent, I have found that healing comes in layers. If we were to address every past hurt, dysfunctional trait, and life stressor at one time, I think we’d implode. So we take recovery work one day at a time. I believe the body and our spirit know what we’re ready to work on and bring our stuff to the surface when it’s time. The goal of therapy is not to be completely healed into perfection, but to increasingly feel more like our true self. It is to remove coping strategies that aren’t helping us anymore and begin to live lives that feel aligned with our values. Moderation can help with this because it gives the ability to pause, evaluate, and decide. It gets us into reality.
