I am here to help clients who struggle with codependency, stress/inflammation, relationships, and engaging with their spirituality. I follow Pia Mellody’s framework for codependency and define it as a disease of immaturity caused by childhood trauma. Codependents have difficulty in the following areas: appropriate levels of self-esteem, setting functional boundaries, knowing and expressing your authentic self, addressing needs and wants, and expressing reality moderately (acting your age). These symptoms of codependence formulate secondary symptoms including, negative control, resentment, impaired spirituality, addictions, and intimacy issues.

I specialize in codependency work, the love addiction and avoidance cycle, and growing the body’s tolerance to stress. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ARP), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping for high anxiety and OCD clients. I also incorporate neurofeedback treatment when appropriate.

My personal recovery started in 2014 and I understand the courage it takes to raise awareness of patterns and beliefs that aren’t helping anymore and try a new way of living. We are located in the Biofeedback Education and Training Center. Our physical bodies are an expression of what’s going on in us. The way we dress, our facial expressions, how much space we need from different people... these are ways we choose to share who we are. Gaining awareness of how each of us communicates what we think and feel can protect us from hurting each other. Notice this week what your awareness level is when it comes to how your body is functioning and what you do to care for your body. Emotions are messengers. They have no moral compass and no control over how we use them. Among all the emotions, anger is one that we tend to shy away from. If I ask clients if they felt anger after having been wronged, they have a hard time acknowledging it. Some will allow themselves the feeling of “frustration” or being “upset”... but anger seems to be unacceptable. The reason? Codependents spend a lot of time and energy on maintaining the status quo. We are most comfortable when the elements of life are predictable and calm. It’s fun how life doesn’t really work that way. Bruce Feiler, in his book Life Is In the Transitions, noted that “the average person goes through one disruptor every 12-18 months.” When talking with people about life transitions, most said there was something in their life at the moment that felt “off schedule, off course, out of sync, out of order.” Operating out of spiritual extremes can create walls of distance between us and God or lack of spiritual boundaries. Observing whether the amount of time and energy we place on the spiritual feels balanced with other components of life is one way to protect ourselves and also feed the soul. A mandala is a configuration of symbols into a cohesive piece of art. This artistic exercise can be used to readjust our focus. If you’d like to try it, pick some categories of life that are important to you (or taking up a lot of your time) and give each category a symbol. Then, work all those symbols into one image. Notice where you place different symbols and be curious about why. Do certain symbols get more repetition than others? Are some bigger or smaller in the picture? Let this exercise bring about some curiosity of what you’d like to prioritize in your life at this time. https://www.instagram.com/p/DdrgvFyt-0J/ Pia Mellody describes the symptoms of codependence as displaying themselves through the way we think, feel, and behave. When I think about these elements in extremes, I think about what they have provided. We as humans are not prone to doing something that has zero benefit. So, if living in extremes is sabotaging our lives, why keep doing it? Codependents use an “all or nothing” type mentality as a form of protection from uncertainty. This can make interacting with others difficult - especially if they hold a different opinion, perspective, or solution. There is a fear that someone having a different feeling or belief threatens who we are. This can lead to much of our energy attempting to control or convince people to agree with us than it allows for us to listen and get to know others. Fear blocks connection. Safety invites curiosity. This week, how could you interact with people differently if you knew you would be okay no matter what? This type of experiment opens us up to deepening relationships we are currently in and experiencing new rewarding connections.
